This is e a digital catalogue of 230 songs from the medieval period to the early nineteenth century, categorised according to generic type, musical incipit and other features and thus permitting for the first time comparison of songs distant in time but linked across history by melody, form or audience. Facsimile images of manuscript and early printed editions are provided, as also modern musical annotation and commentaries on each song.
This database includes bibliographical and summary details of over 200 printed sources of Scottish fiddle music from before 1850. Most of the sources are substantial printed collections, but the database also includes some of the hundreds of surviving single-sheet publications. 22 sources have been digitised and indexed complete.
This website, developed by the project PI, is a continually updated database of works of genre fiction, film and TV by Muslim women creators. Initially developed to support a third-year module, over the course of the AHRC project it has been updated and further developed. As of 8 March 2024 it contains 455 entries across 20 genres, published between 2002 and 2024.
The data collated is largely gathered through individuals with members of diaspora Afghans from a variety of religious backgrounds, including those identifying as Muslim, Sikh, Hindu and Jewish. The study focuses on diaspora settings in which these communities are especially established, notably London and New York. Individuals were selected to be interviewed on the basis of their playing an active role in the life of the communities and also on the basis of ethnographic fieldwork undertaken by the researcher. The data also includes a discussion of the ethnographic work undertaken by the researcher in the form of a series of reports. Included also are notes in a book on Afghanistan’s Hindu community (translated from Persian).
Questionnaires in Arabic were distributed electronically to Muslim residents and former residents of popular / working-class (sha‘bi) quarters of Aleppo through an Arab Muslim former resident of the Hilluk district of Aleppo who had migrated to Gaziantep during the Syrian civil war (2012-). Life history interviews were also conducted with prominent Aleppine Armenian members of the Armenian community in Kuwait: the priest of the Armenian church in Aleppo, and two leading Syrian Armenian merchants who run successful businesses in Kuwait and play a prominent role in the Armenian community there.
The database contains entries of over 550 pageants (and growing). These list a wealth of information about individual historical pageants, sometimes in great detail. Insofar as records allow (and little trace remains of many pageants), we have sought to record details of the times and places of performances, those involved in organising and staging them, and how many people attended. For each pageant, we have also sought to record, again as fully as possible, whether the pageant made or lost money, details of the music that was played and who composed it, and synopses of the individual episodes which featured. In addition, for each pageant record we provide lists of the names of the notable historical figures that featured in the action. Last but certainly not least, we have prepared a detailed summary essay explaining each pageant and placing it in its wider historical context. We have information on all – or nearly all – of the largest pageants performed in twentieth-century Britain as well as a broadly representative sample of smaller pageants.
The Reading Experience Database, 1450-1945 (RED), housed and developed at the OU is the world’s largest database about reading habits. An online, open-access project with over 30,000 entries, it is revolutionising public understanding of the history of reading. RED is democratising scholarship about the history of reading by encouraging ordinary members of the public from any location to contribute and use information about readers through history. 120+ volunteers from outside academia have already contributed some 6,000 entries. RED attracts over 1500 users per month from over 135 countries and has inspired partner projects in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and New Zealand.
This database provides narrative accounts of the salient historical information on the history and architecture of the individual buildings and sites, accompanied by a full apparatus of references and by images of those buildings and sites.
